The difference between a tenor and alto saxaphone

When reading this refer back to the picture. (from left to right: mini soprano, soprano, alto, tenor, barry or baritone)

Everyone gets the tenor and the alto sax completely mixed up. The main differences are:

  1. The tenor is bigger

  2. The alto is more commonly used

  3. The tenor is used more often in Jazz than the alto

  4. The tenor is just better overall

In Symphonic Winds the other day I was waiting for my music to be handed out, one of the helpers comes up to me and says here you are alto. I almost threw a fit! The alto's were sitting together behind the clarinets and I was sitting with the bass line along with the barry (baritone saxophone). Then she attempts to give the barry my part and the alto's barry's score.

At least it isn't like that for Jazz everyone knows which instrument is which...
